Location
Victoria square, Haparanda and Tornio, on the borderline between Finland and Sweden.
Project type
Sculpture, Public artwork
One o the most multidimensional project and well-known art piece by Susanna Sivonen is the world’s first hybrid sundial, a
sculpture made of steel to the border of Finland and Sweden, called Through the Ages. (Original: Läpi Aikojen / Genom Tiderna) It’s a gift by
the city of Haparanda and the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten to the city of Tornio in honor of the 100th anniversary of independent Finland, on 6th December 2017.
The three meters high sculpture is a combination of modern clock technology and historical
timekeeping science. It connects two countries, two cities and a common cultural history and
people who live their time together. The sculpture deals with friendship, trust and appreciation and
the biggest thing we have; passing time, opportunities to create an increasingly better future
throughout the ages.
The sculpture's clock technology is controlled via four miniature computers embedded in the work and is connected to the world clock GMT through its own internet connection. The clock's lighting is controlled with a twilight switch, which regulates the lighting power according to the seasons and times of the day. In the middle, the sundial, gives
nature's answer of what time the clock actually shows at the border.
